Synopsis

During the grape harvest season, migratory workers gather at a San Joaquin Valley vineyard owned by Sam Ludlow and his son, Tom. The manager of the ranch is Whitey, a brutish man who treats the workers like animals, forces the women to bathe in the irrigation canals, beats up Mexican drunks, and uses the women sexually. He is secretly planning to seize control of the vineyard from young Tom Ludlow, who resents his father's excusing Whitey on the grounds he gets the work done. One day Whitey goads Tom into a fight and savagely beats him into unconsciousness. Eventually the women workers draw up a petition against Whitey and Madge, a young woman, is selected to deliver it to Ludlow. Before she can do so, she is intercepted by Whitey who has been warned by Rose, his mistress, and he attempts to rape her. During the struggle, the girl falls to her death through a broken floor shaft. Whitey races to his cabin and locks himself inside. But Rose gives the women workers a key and they pin him to the floor and attack him with razor-sharp pruning shears. He survives his mutilation as the women leave the cabin silently.
