Synopsis

A brightly plumed tropical bird, infected with a rare virus that causes instant happiness, arrives in Manhattan on a Greek freighter and immediately spreads the "disease" to normally irritable New Yorkers. Among the first to be infected are Pete, a Madison Avenue drop-out who has become an East Village artist, and his hippie girl friend, Liz. They soon become well-dressed disseminators of good will; they adopt the bird, name it Amigo, and protect it from city officials who are disturbed by the alarming drop in liquor, cigarette, and tranquilizer sales. Fearing a collapse of the city's financial structure, the mayor enlists the assistance of presidential aide J. Gardner Monroe. When germ masks are distributed to the populace, Pete and his new friends thwart the government's plan by infecting the masks. Eventually, Amigo is captured, and an antidote is found for the mass euphoria. Soon New Yorkers are again snarling at each other, and Pete returns to his former bearded, shiftless self. Liz, who never actually contracted the virus, remains the same since she was only responding to the kindness of others. After Amigo has escaped from his Central Park aviary, Pete finally realizes that Liz is all that he really wants, and the two are reunited.
