Synopsis

A British troopship from India nears the Somersetshire dock at Southampton with the 23rd Royal Lancers regiment aboard. The regiment has just completed five years of foreign service and is due for an extended leave, but learns by radio that there has been an outbreak of trouble in the Near East, so they will have only six hours leave at Southampton before setting sail once more. In those six hours, Colonel Harry Blair learns that his wife is critically ill, is about to undergo an operation that will only prolong her life a short time, and that he must say goodbye to her for the final time. Captain Gilbert Reed falls in love with nurse Ann Harrison aboard the ship, though he realizes that his fiancée, Lady Joan Anstruther, awaits him onshore with another suitor, Roddy Hammond. Gilbert and Joan break their engagement, so both are free to marry their true loves. During his brief shore leave, Gilbert's orderly, Jim Carter, attempts to murder his girl friend, Elsie Wainwright, a clerk in a tobacco shop, thinking that she has been unfaithful to him. While Corporal Eldrich marries his fiancée onshore, the regiment bugler, who lives the life of a bachelor, is met at the dock by his long-forgotten wife. Another soldier's wife gives birth aboard the ship. At the end of those six hours, the regiment sets sail once more to serve His Majesty abroad, leaving their loved-ones behind, as before.
