Synopsis

Shortly before the end of the Korean War, a courageous but battle-weary soldier, Private Scharack, learns that his long-overdue rotation home has been suppressed by his tough but cowardly superior, Captain Tombolo. Enraged, Scharack hitches a ride to a field hospital, pretending severe headaches, but is humiliated by the equally war-weary doctor. When Scharack returns to his outfit, Tombolo punishes him by giving him latrine duty. Scharack becomes even more embittered when Tombolo orders a patrol into enemy territory on the very night that the "cease fire" is expected. Before the patrol sets out, however, Tombolo accidentally steps on a "bouncing Betty"--a mine that explodes when one steps off the plunger. Though none of the other men come to Tombolo's aid, Scharack wraps the captain in flack jackets and tells him to leap off the bomb. But the terrified Tombolo is unable to move, and Scharack is forced to push him off. Tombolo is unharmed but Scharack is seriously wounded and sent to a hospital. At 10 p.m., when the "cease fire" is sounded, Tombolo's clumsy attempt at an apology is flatly rejected by his men.
