Cast & Crew
As the Japanese invade the Philippines in 1942, U. S. pilot Chip Corbett agrees, for a price, to fly a Filipino war profiteer to safety. Forced to crashland on Corregidor, Corbett meets Colonel Turner, the commandant of the island, and missionary nurse Joan Barnes, who are aiding a small garrison in attempting to remove the Philippine government's stock of gold bullion to a waiting submarine. Before they can transfer the gold from a barge, however, the submarine is sunk by the Japanese. A decision is then made to sink the barge with a homemade bomb so that the gold will be safe at the bottom of the bay until the war is over. Corbett's interest in the gold increases, and he volunteers to drop the bomb if a plane can be found. When Joan says that they can obtain an aircraft at a missionary station some miles away, the small band of Americans and Filipinos set out through headhunter country. Although Colonel Turner is killed in a skirmish with the Japanese, Joan's friendship with the headhunters is rewarded when the natives use blowpipes against the pursuing enemy. Nevertheless, Joan is mortally wounded during the jungle fighting and dies when they reach the mission. Corbett, who had fallen in love with Joan, dedicates himself to the Filipinos' cause and flies off with the bomb, aware that his mission will probably be suicidal.
