Synopsis

Commander Nelson, the skipper of Explorer , a United Nations atomic submarine for research, is looking for the legendary King Kong when he surfaces his vessel at Mondo Island and goes ashore with Lieut. Joe Nomura and another expedition member, Susan. A prehistoric monster attacks Susan, whereupon King Kong appears and saves her. He takes an immediate liking to Susan and tries to prevent the party from leaving the island, but Susan persuades him to allow them to depart. Meanwhile, the evil Dr. Who, a megalomaniac, is having difficulties at his North Pole laboratory with his robot Mechani-Kong, a giant, gorilla-like robot which cannot function when exposed to the highly dangerous substance Element X. Therefore, Dr. Who and his assistant Madame Piranha (who works for an alien power) capture King Kong, as well as Nelson, Nomura, and Susan, just in case the creature needs controlling. Dr. Who hypnotizes Kong into doing his bidding, but the rays of Element X break the trance. Susan is about to be tortured for refusing to help control Kong when he escapes and heads toward Tokyo. Dr. Who sends Mechani-Kong after him, and the two creatures wage a battle atop Tokyo Tower. Madame Piranha experiences a change of heart and releases Commander Nelson, Susan, and Lieut. Nomura. Piranha then ends the fight by destroying Mechani-Kong's remote control mechanism, and Dr. Who retaliates by shooting her. Finally, King Kong kills Dr. Who and returns to his island home in the sea.

Trivia

Two costumes of King Kong were made. The arms of the first costume were very long, so Haruo Nakajima's hands did not reach those of the costume. He had to grasp onto sticks that were attached to the hands of the costume. He wore a second costume with shorter arms whenever they were shooting footage of King Kong battling other monsters.

The way Kong kills Gorosaurus, buy splitting his jaws apart, is the same way the original Kong kills the tyrannosaurus in the original King Kong (1933).

Even though 'Linda Miller' was an American that spoke fluent English, her voice was dubbed by Julie Bennett.

This film was a live action tie-in to the animated TV series "King Kong" (1966), was was also produced by Rankin/Bass Productions, and not a sequel to _"KinguKongu tai Gojira" (1962)_ (also produced by Toho and directed by Ishiro Honda) as is often suggested.

Notes

Produced in Japan in 1967 as Kingu Kongu no gyakushu; running time: 104 min. May also have been known as King Kong no gyakushu.
