Synopsis

Paul and Daniel, accomplices in a burglary, are apprehended while they are attempting to open a safe. In the struggle, Paul murders a man and escapes, but Daniel is captured by the police and convicted of the murder. Daniel escapes from prison a year later, and he is befriended by Thomas, an innkeeper who also operates a garage, and his young wife Maria, an ex-prostitute who married him for his money. Daniel and Thomas become friends, but Maria learns of Daniel's past and blackmails him into opening her husband's safe. Thomas arrives just before Daniel opens the safe. Daniel convinces Thomas that he had no interest in the money; that Maria blackmailed him into opening the safe. In an argument with her husband, Maria kills him. Daniel buries Thomas in the workshop of the gas station and is trapped into staying with Maria, but he refuses to open the safe for her. Daniel's former accomplice, Paul, arrives unexpectedly, and Maria tries to seduce him into opening the safe. He, too, refuses, but when Maria is gone, he attempts to open it for himself. Maria catches him, but he kills her after she threatens him with a shotgun. Paul attempts to escape when the police arrive, but he is captured as his automobile crashes into a gas pump. The house and filling station go up in flames, but the injured Daniel manages to escape at the last minute.
