Synopsis

When wealthy Doris Maynard breaks the news to her father that she has secretly married her chauffeur, Dan Simmons, Maynard angrily asks Dan his price and warns that his only chance to get any money from him is to accept a check to leave his daughter immediately. Insulted, Doris leaves with Dan. After three months of marriage, Doris, upset that Dan spends every evening playing cards in their apartment, interrupts a game upon hearing unsavory talk and demands that the players gamble someplace else. When Dan accuses another player, Tom, of cheating, Tom hits Dan and gives him until the next day at five to pay his debt of $500. Doris learns that a bill collector has waived their debt because Dan told him that she was Maynard's daughter. After she also finds out that Dan has pawned her jewelry, lost all his money at the racetrack and borrowed $3,000 from a bank by forging her father's signature, she calls him unspeakably vile and gives him back his wedding ring. When a policeman arrives at their home with a warrant for Dan's arrest, Dan hides and then escapes. Doris returns to her father and suffers a collapse due to shock and exhaustion. When she recovers, her father shows her a news item stating that a man who has died in an automobile crash was identified from a tailor's label as Dan. Months later, Doris is courted by district attorney Donald Thorne. When he proposes, Maynard advises Doris to marry him and not to tell him about Dan, and she complies. Later, as Donald campaigns for re-election, crooked political boss Denman pays Donald's former servant Manners, whom Doris has fired for padding their bills and pocketing the difference, to plant incriminating letters among Donald's private papers to discredit him. After Donald leaves one night to deliver a speech, Doris hears someone break into the house downstairs. Below, as Manners hides the letters in a secret desk drawer, he finds a gun that Donald gave Doris for protection. Upstairs, Doris discovers Dan about to steal her jewelry. Manners overhears Doris give Dan jewels and money to silence him about their marriage. Afterwards, outside the house, Manners struggles with Dan for the loot, and Dan is killed with the gun Manners took from the house. After the body and gun are found, Denman tells Donald that the dead man was Doris' first husband. Donald learns that the story is true from Maynard and then expresses doubt in his wife when she tries to explain. Doris has another breakdown, and Denman threatens to give his information to the newspapers if Donald does not resign. After finding the letters hidden by Manners, Donald, now believing in Doris, revives her with a kiss. Through the surveillance of Denman's men, Donald locates Manners about to leave for the airport and finds the incriminating jewels that Doris gave Dan. Denman and his gang are then arrested.
