Synopsis

Mistakenly believing that his actress wife, Helene, is having an affair with young barrister Robert Vaughan, jealous socialite Donald Edwards decides to murder her. Donald hires Kersten, a professional killer, to do the job during a farewell party for Helene before she leaves London for the United States. Donald telephones his wife to say that he will not be able to attend her party. Kersten, however, tells Helene of her husband's plot, hides her in his cottage, and demands his fee from Donald. Donald, who is planning to murder Kersten to protect himself, insists on proof that his wife is dead. Kersten indignantly replies that he has committed the perfect crime but agrees to show Donald the corpse. He shows Donald what appears to be a body in the back of his car, and Donald, crazed and unable to look at his wife, hands over the money. After Kersten has pulled back the blanket revealing only pillows, Donald shoots him and then runs him down while driving away. Upon arriving at Kersten's cottage, Donald meets Robert and is preparing to shoot him when the mortally wounded Kersten appears and kills Donald before dying. Robert comforts Helene, who plans to resume her acting career in the United States.
