The Black Raven
Cast & Crew
Amos Bradford operates the Black Raven inn, from which Amos has earned his nickname, in a remote section of northern United States, through which he illegally transports fugitives over the Canadian border. Amos' former business partner, Whitey Cole, escapes from prison to exact revenge against Amos for supposedly having turned him over to the police to protect himself. Whitey arrives at the Black Raven on a stormy night, and Amos and his right-hand man, Andy, quickly overwhelm the fugitive and hold him captive. Several guests soon check in because all the bridges in the rural area are washed out. Racketeer Mike Bardoni wants Amos' help getting across the border because corrupt politician Tim Winfield took over his business and reported him to the police. The other guests are Allen Bentley, who is eloping with Lee Winfield, Tim's daughter; and Horace Weatherby, a bespectacled bank cashier who stole $50,000 and is wanted by the police. Tim arrives looking for his daughter and coincidentally encounters Bardoni. Tim starts a fight with Allen over Lee, and dials the sheriff to have him arrested for kidnapping, as Lee is under twenty-one, but the phone line goes dead. When Tim recognizes Horace as the fugitive robber, he convinces him to turn over the satchel containing the stolen money to avoid prosecution. Tim is later found dead from a blow to the head, and the money has disappeared. Everyone suspects one another, and the newly arrived sheriff immediately suspects Allen because of his earlier altercation with Tim. Although Amos tries to protect Allen, the young man escapes and hides in the cellar. After Whitey also disappears, Bardoni searches for the stolen money, but finds nothing. Bardoni is later murdered in Amos' office, and Amos realizes the bullet was meant for him. Outside, after Amos he sees Horace retrieve the satchel from a hiding place, he is shot by Whitey. Before he dies, Amos kills Whitey and reveals that, based on evidence he has found, Horace killed Tim. Horace confesses to the murder and explains that he stole the $50,000 to relieve his poverty and misery, and that he flew into a rage and killed Tim for taking it from him.
