Synopsis

Lance Corbett, a star prep school athlete, is offered a Standish College scholarship if he joins the school's rowing team. Lance is more concerned with his studies than sports and initially decides to forgo the scholarship, but when Connie Adams, who wants Lance to accept the offer, succeeds in getting him fired from every job he finds, he changes his mind and takes the scholarship. When Cap Collender, owner of a nightclub and gambling resort, learns that three of Standish College's best rowing team members have flunked their exams and disqualified themselves from the season's races, he calls his bookie and places a bet against the team. Although the Standish crew wins several races, the team's success fades quickly when Johnny Ames is removed from the crew for failing his exams and when Squirt Adams gets drunk one night and gambles away the school fund. After Lance is set to take Ames's place on the team, he tries to repair the damage caused by Adams by asking Collender to loan him the amount of the lost school money. As collateral, Lance gives Collender a check from Adams for a portion of the sum, and promises that Adams' parents will repay the rest. However, a raid on Collender's nightclub spoils Lance's plans and results in his and the owner's arrest. The next day, the Standish campus is abuzz with rumors of a scandal. Lance is blamed when the team loses its next race and is soon accused of taking a $300 bribe. Later, Collender breaks his promise and deposits Adams' check in the bank, and when it bounces, tries to recoup his money by blackmailing Adams into throwing the next race, on which he will be betting. Upon learning that Collender double-crossed him, Lance engages him in a fight and, though he receives a severe injury, manages to retrieve the bounced check. Lance shows up for the big race in time to take his place at the starting line. Soon after the race begins, a doctor informs the coach that Lance has two broken ribs and is risking a punctured lung by rowing. The Standish team rows itself to victory with Lance's help and Lance is checked into a hospital to recuperate. Meanwhile, Adams confesses to losing the school fund, which results in an apology to Lance from the student body.
