Synopsis

In Virginia in 1880, a Yankee of dubious origin marries the daughter of a distinguished plantation owner. Unbeknownst to his bride, the groom intends to revenge himself on her father, who had initially rejected his suit. To this end he subjects his wife to constant humiliation. Unwilling to break her father's heart, the bride bears his taunts stoically. Frustrated by his wife's refusal to confide these woes to her father, the husband binds the pregnant women to a roadside tree and unleashes his bloodhounds, which tear away her clothing. The next day her humiliation is common knowledge. The culprit having vanished, the victim returns to her paternal home. There she gives birth to a son, Archy. When her father dies of a broken heart, the woman moves to New England. Discovering that her son is gifted with a bloodhound's sense of smell, the woman trains him to track down his father. Upon reaching maturity, Archy undertakes this mission and travels westward. After relentlessly pursuing his presumed father, Archy discovers that he has ruined the wrong man. By accident, however, he witnesses his true father's murder by the wronged nephew of Sherlock Holmes.
