Synopsis
Upon release from a mental institution, Paul, a former mathematics teacher, visits Martin, a motion picture director, and suggests a film depicting earth as Hell, in which human destiny is dictated by the Devil. Although Martin ridicules the idea, he relates it to Thomas, an alcoholic journalist. The writer is reminded of the life of Birgitta-Carolina Söderberg, a prostitute whose pimp, Peter, kills their illegitimate infant. Birgitta-Carolina falls in love with Thomas, who is estranged from his wife, Sofi, but returns to Peter when he threatens to disrupt the writer's life. In despair she slashes her wrists. Upon consideration Martin rejects the possibility of a film about the meaninglessness of life.
