In the racially segregated desert town of Cicada, Bob, a former paratrooper, and Bessie, a black woman, fall in love. The townspeople violently oppose the affair, and there is a confrontation between the lovers' fathers. Although the two men prepare to fight in the desert, their hatred dissolves when they discover a spring. They return to the town with the hope of bringing the people together. Spurned by the populace, the two families leave to form their own community.
