A shoeshine girl steals a loaf of bread to help a sickly, impoverished neighbor, but the authorities catch her and take her to juvenile court. Judge Clayton recognizes the kindness that motivated the theft, however, so he drops the charge and brings the shine girl to his mother's home in the country. While at home, the judge meets an old sweetheart, Margaret Kenyon, now unhappily married. They decide to run away together, but when the shine girl finds out, she tells the judge that, just as it was wrong for her to take the bread, it is wrong for him to take another man's wife. As a result of this counsel, the judge calls off the elopement, and then, slowly, falls in love with the shine girl, whom he eventually marries.
