Synopsis

After a Democratic president is elected, Ezra Hickman, the leading citizen of Kankakee, Illinois, is persuaded by his ambitious wife Martha to go to Washington D. C. to get an important position. Although Ezra's clothes and manner are ludicrously out of place at the White House, he becomes the consul to Vergania, an Eastern kingdom, when Vergania's ambassador, who wants to add an American girl to his leader Selim Bey's harem, meets Ezra's daughter Amy. She reluctantly leaves her new sweetheart, Navy Lieutenant Robert Brice, to go with her family and becomes the Selim's favorite, to the displeasure of his former favorite, Hanoum. When Hanoum attempts to kill Amy, the Hickmans learn the Selim's intent and plan to leave, but they are imprisoned in the castle tower. Brice's ship arrives, and after Hanoum swims out and informs Brice that Amy is imprisoned, an armed force storms the palace and rescues Amy just in time. Selim Bey, who earlier wiped his feet on the American flag, is forced to salute it.
