Synopsis

Social climber Olive Sherwood moves from Omaha to New York when her late father's unscrupulous stockbroker, Arnold West, tells her that securities which she inherited will give her a sizeable income. Olive spends money lavishly on clothes and other luxuries and joins a society crowd which also includes old Omaha friends Horace, Anna, and Ruth Watling. When Richard Burbank, a dashing millionaire, proposes to Olive, she accepts, but their happiness is interrupted by a jealous West who reveals that he has been supporting Olive and that her stocks are worthless. Richard believes that Olive had consented to this arrangement, so she moves back to Omaha where she becomes an ordinary seamstress. The Watlings lose both their fortune and their friends in New York and return to Omaha as well. Meanwhile, West, who now faces financial ruin because of misconduct, dies of a heart attack brought on by drug addiction. Finally, Richard realizes Olive's innocence and goes to her in Omaha when Ruth writes him a note informing him of her whereabouts.
