Synopsis

A look at Japan through the centuries up to the start of its modern era, as depicted in three episodes. In "The Way of the Samurai," 16th century Japan, ruled by warlords and the Samurai, is unified and creates a lasting dynasty that continues for over two centuries. In "The Will of the Shogun," Japan's warlord structure is streamlined, and all foreigners are banished from the country, prompting a new society forged on devoted obedience. In "The Return of the Barbarians," the Japan of the 18th century, free of western influence, particularly the city of Edo, flourishes and ushers in the country's modern era.
