Maria is the daughter of a well-respected doctor in a small Swedish village in 1820. She has been blind for 10 years, since the time that Russian troops raided the town. Then a mysterious Dane comes to town, calling himself a magnetist and claiming that he can cure Maria. The villagers see him as a charlatan, but Maria's father lets him stay, desperate to help his daughter.
