Synopsis

Sylvain and Geneviève are modern young sophisticates living an easy life among the ruins of one of Louis XV's unfinished cities. Sylvain was once regarded as a promising writer on the strength of his first book, but he has written nothing since. Geneviève has had a succession of love affairs; now that she is apparently settled with Sylvain, she wonders if their marriage can last. When the local squire, Jacques Saint-Fond, falls in love with Geneviève, she finds herself returning his affection; furthermore, Sylvain is momentarily drawn to Françoise, the squire's wife. Eventually, Geneviève reproaches Sylvain for his immaturity and lack of ambition. Following their argument, she decides to leave him and return to Paris with the squire, even though his political career will be ended. Saint-Fond is actually happy to rid himself of public office and a frigid wife. As they prepare to depart, Geneviève realizes that Sylvain is totally helpless without her, yet she needs the lonely and mature Saint-Fond. The only solution is an unorthodox one: the three of them agree to live together in Paris.
