Cast & Crew
Francis is delivering a jeep to Grenoble when he picks up Samuel. They become friends, but Francis soon discovers that Samuel has stolen part of the jeep's engine. At a carnival Francis meets, seduces, and falls in love with Anna, a young widow. The jeep breaks down, and they stay in a nearby hotel while it is being repaired. Meanwhile, Samuel has been playing poker with the local farmers. The cardplayers catch him cheating and in a fury, beat him up and break his hands. Francis and Anna nurse him for a while, but Samuel goes off, despairing over the mutilation. In a wooded area, he meets an old woman and tries to show her a card trick. When she laughs at him, he goes mad and strangles her. Francis joins a group of men who include the cardplaying farmers, to hunt Samuel down. When they confront him, Samuel shoots and kills the men who maimed him. Francis then shoots his friend so that he will not be captured.
