Synopsis
Donald Bryant and Robert Wainwright, students at a Washington Square art school, both love Helen, another student. After Donald wins the prize for the best work, he and Helen marry. While Wainwright goes to Paris and achieves fame and wealth, Donald, refusing to pander to the public's taste, is forced to live in genteel poverty. The art dealer Dolbeare, confident of Donald's talent, gives him $5,000 and an uptown studio in exchange for everything Donald paints. When Dolbeare leers at a nude that Donald painted of Helen, and Donald destroys it, Dolbeare dispossesses Donald and demands the $5,000. Meanwhile, Wainwright, back from Paris, asks Dolbeare's help to find a model. Helen, learning that Wainwright admires Donald's sketches of her, offers herself to obtain the needed $5,000. After a few semi-nude poses, Donald, thinking that Helen is unfaithful, goes to Wainwright's studio with a gun. Helen, hiding during the struggle, is accidentally shot in the breast. After a physician diagnoses the wound as slight, Donald listens to Wainwright's explanations and reaffirms his love for Helen.
