After Lord Erstmere, a French nobleman, feeling compassion for the oppressed people, gives up his estate, he becomes a wandering musician and the leader of the populace against the nobility. He falls in love with an orphaned girl who was found in the woods and reared by a peasant couple. Although at first he places her with his aunt to prepare her for marriage, he later takes her away to prevent her from being corrupted by society. Later, the man who usurped Erstmere's estate falls in love with the girl and attempts to seduce her with the help of a Parisian prostitute. The prostitute, who really is the girl's mother, saves her from the usurper, and returns her to Erstmere.
