Synopsis

As rancher Jim Langley and his friend Scrubby drive their herd to a new range, they go by the town of Cottonwood, where Scrubby's sister Ethyle and her husband Jake Horne live. Jake, who is a cattle rustler, was once saved from jail by Jim, who helped him out of friendship for Scrubby and Ethyle. Although Jake has continued to rustle cattle and rob stagecoaches with a gang he formed with Soapy and Hank, Ethyle has stayed with her husband for the sake of their baby. When she discovers that Jake's gang is responsible for the murder of the town sheriff in a recent stagecoach robbery, however, she decides to leave him. In a fit of anger, Jake knocks Ethyle down with a blow to the head. When Jim and Scrubby arrive at their cabin, Jake has left, leaving his dead wife on the floor and their baby crying in the next room. Jim then goes out looking for milk for the hungry baby and is discovered milking a cow on a neighboring ranch by Helen Hobart, the rancher's daughter. Helen assumes that Jim is a rustler and holds a gun on him, but he disarms her and takes her back to the cabin to care for the baby. Soon detectives Waters and Thomas arrive at the cabin and, believing that Jim and Scrubby are the stagecoach bandits, arrest them. Jim and Scrubby escape from the detectives, however, and realize that they must capture the real robbers to clear themselves. When Jake, Soapy and Hank go back to the cabin to look for their loot, Jim and Scrubby overpower them and hold them until the detectives return. Now realizing her mistake, Helen apologizes to Jim and leaves the cabin with him, while Scrubby is left behind to look after the baby.
