Synopsis

Herbert Dubois, a young medical student studying in Paris, goes on a debauch and wakes up to discover he has married a grisette, Annette. He leaves her in Paris and returns to America when he receives word that his father has committed suicide because of financial difficulties, and that he must care for his widowed mother. Later, he receives word that Annette has died. Herbert begins practicing forensic medicine, and soon falls in love with Florence Lockwood, whom he marries. Meanwhile, Annette is still alive but is suffering from a cataleptic episode. She comes to America looking for Herbert but suffers another seizure and is brought to the hospital where Herbert is the physician on duty. In preparation for the autopsy, he discovers his wife is alive, and goes through the moral dilemma of whether or not he should proceed with the autopsy. He and his wife are expecting a baby and with Annette out of the way, his problems would be solved. Annette revives temporarily but then expires just before Herbert receives word that he has a newly born son.
