Synopsis

The head of the conservative Jardee family wishes his daughter Gabrielle to marry a Frenchman, and in order to break up her romance with American John Morgan, he sends her to a little village on the Meuse to visit her aunt. With the declaration of war, the village is captured by the Germans, and her aunt, sister and brother are killed. When the Kommandant, Duke Karl, promises to save the lives of the townspeople if she will become his mistress, Gabrielle reluctantly consents, but she uses her position to secure valuable information for the Allies. For three years, Gabrielle successfully conceals her loathing for the duke, transmitting information to John by means of a secret code. Following Duke Karl's transfer to Berlin, however, he finds Gabrielle stealing classified documents. She kills him and then escapes to Paris, where she finally finds happiness with John.
