Synopsis
Sheriff Jim Macy recognizes the horse ridden by Lane Cartwright and suspects he may be the mysterious "Phantom Bandit." When questioned, Lane explains that the horse is borrowed, and he has come from Pan Handled in hopes of joining a cow outfit. A local friend of Lane, Bert Bronson, confirms Lane's identity. Benny Broderick, a victim of the Phantom Bandit, explains to Lane how the Phantom has caused widespread suspicion in the community. After news arrives that the Phantom has held up the Walker ranch, taking $21,000 in cash, Benny vows to capture the Phantom, while Lane is sworn in as a deputy. The sheriff arranges for Lane to stay at the ranch of Bess Mitchell, who dislikes the attentions of ranch hand Buck Rawlins. After Buck orders her brother Bob to send Lane away, the sheriff sends Buck after the Phantom. Buck, however, kills Black Jack Walton, who was working a claim at Twin Forks, and then Buck and his friend, Luke, blame Lane for the crime. Lane suspects Bob, who is always away when the Phantom strikes. Benny warns Bess that Lane is about to be lynched, and she brings the sheriff to stop the mobs. When Bess claims she saw a bank being robbed by the Phantom, Bob admits he was held prisoner by the unknown rider. The sheriff agrees with Lane about the evidence. Later, Lane leads the way to Dark Canyon, sending Bess to bring the sheriff. There, he sees the Phantom meet Buck and plan their escape. Bess tells the sheriff about the canyon, an old outlaw hideout from her childhood days, and upon the sheriff's arrival, the Phantom is revealed to be a man named Hank Carson.

Notes
In the dialogue continuity in copyright files, the villain is alternately called "Phantom Rider" and "Phantom Bandit." While copyright descriptive material refers to a "Phantom Rider Series," only one other film using that character has been found, The Outlaw Tamer (see below). According to modern sources, the cast also included Forrest Taylor.
