In Eagle Rock County, rancher Huxley demands that Sheriff Smoky Moore run ex-convict Jack Stewart out of the county. Although Jack swears that he was wrongly convicted of cattle rustling, Huxley refuses to allow him any time to sell his ranch. Huxley then leads a lynch mob of ranchers, who knock out Smoky and attempt to hang Jack, until cowboys Tom Cameron, who is renowned as "The Lone Rider," and his sidekick, Fuzzy Jones, put a halt to the proceedings. After running the ranchers off, Tom and Fuzzy revive their old friend Smoky, and Jack is indebted to them for saving his life. Later at the Santa Clarissa mission, bandit leader Nora Mason reprimands her henchman, Trimmer Davis, who is disguised as a monk, for failing to kill Jack. She then commissions him to get rid of Jack and Tom, both of whom pose a potential threat to her operations. Nora lives with Jack's daughter Kate, who is unaware of her friend's criminal double-life and the fact that Nora hides stolen cattle on her property. Tom becomes suspicious of Nora after recognizing her necklace as belonging to the wife of a notorious outlaw. After several threats are made against Jack's life, Tom offers to help defend Jack against the other ranchers. Tom obtains Nora's necklace and confirms that she is not only an outlaw's wife, but a dangerous outlaw herself. However, Kate refuses to believe Tom's allegations against her friend. Nora and Trimmer plot to once again frame Jack by herding Huxley's stolen cattle onto his land, with the hope that an enraged Huxley might shoot Jack. Huxley fulfills their expectations, and after Jack is killed, Fuzzy insists that Smoky arrest Tom as a rustler, as he was caught during the raid. Fuzzy later confides in Smoky that he feared their innocent friend Tom would be lynched by the ranchers if he was not secured in jail. After working out a plan to capture the outlaws, Smoky releases Tom, who disguises himself as a priest and goes to the mission looking for Jose, the former padre. Tom finds Jose being held prisoner by Nora's men. Meanwhile, Kate leaves the ranch to visit her aunt, and Nora sends Trimmer a cake implanted with a secret message. Tom intercepts the cake and learns that the outlaws are plotting to move the stolen cattle that night. Tom then discovers that the outlaws are hiding the stolen cattle in a secret box canyon on Kate's property, and the next day, takes the ranchers there. Rancher Hanagan identifies his stolen herd, and although the outlaw gang attempts to escape, Tom, Fuzzy and Smoky capture Nora and her rustlers, and the ranchers realize that they were mistaken about Jack. With the outlaws arrested, Smoky gives up his badge to join Tom and Fuzzy as they journey to the Klondike to dig for gold.
