Synopsis

While working as a drudge in Mrs. Leadbatter's London boardinghouse, Mary Ann meets Lancelot, a baronet's son striving to make a living on his own as a musician, and a close friendship springs up between the two. One day a stranger visits the boardinghouse with the information that Mary has inherited a fortune from her brother. The stranger makes advances toward Mary Ann, but Lancelot intervenes and rescues her. Upon discovering Mary Ann's inheritance, Lancelot's pride and conscience force him to break off their relationship. Three years later, Lancelot, now a successful musician, seeks Mary Ann out and wins her promise of marriage.
