Cast & Crew
Susan Holden celebrates her fifth birthday with her devoted grandfather and guardian, Geoffrey Holden, her nurse, pretty "Corky" Corcoran, and Corky's boyfriend, Tim Quaine, who is a police investigator specializing in confidence men. Geoffrey is dismayed to learn of Tim's profession, for he and his partner, Sam Havemeyer, travel the country swindling jewelry stores. Corky and Susan's attachment to Tim, however, raises Geoffrey's opinion of him. Soon after the party, Geoffrey and Sam leave for San Diego, although Geoffrey has told his family that he is going to San Francisco. In San Diego, Sam and Geoffrey pull a job worth fifteen hundred dollars, then, as they relax in their hotel, Geoffrey confides that he is worried that he will not be able to hide his profession from Susan for much longer. He suggests playing a final, big con, which will financially secure their futures, and Sam promises to consider it as they part. Upon his return home, Geoffrey is greeted by his odious cousin, Elizabeth Christens, who has been blackmailing him for years. This time, Elizabeth threatens to reveal Geoffrey's crimes and obtain custody of Susan, whose mother and father, Geoffrey's son, were killed in a car accident. Elizabeth's visit is cut short by the arrival of Susan, Corky and Tim, to whom Geoffrey gives presents, as he always does after his "business trips." Tim's gift, a wallet, contains a card for a San Diego hotel, which raises Tim's suspicions. While Tim investigates a string of swindles that have occurred in places where Geoffrey has visited, Geoffrey consults his lawyer, who confirms that Susan can be removed from his custody if he is judged an unfit guardian. After Elizabeth demands $25,000 to keep quiet, Geoffrey goes to Sacramento, where he commits a daring robbery of the Duval et Cie jewelry store. When Tim hears of the crime and learns that a witness has given a description of Geoffrey, he confronts Corky and asks her to quit her job. Corky refuses, stating that she must stay with Susan. Corky then obliquely questions Geoffrey about his "business trips," and tells him that Tim's witness will be arriving the next evening. Realizing that he has only one day to assure Susan's future and get rid of Elizabeth, Geoffrey calls Sam, who tells him that an acquaintance is hiding five million dollars in counterfeit currency on a docked ocean liner. Geoffrey concocts a scheme to get the money off the ship, by posing as a construction boss and setting up a work site on the docks. Tim, who has Geoffrey followed, is baffled by this latest move, but assumes that it is part of a plan to get the Duval et Cie jewels out of the country. Geoffrey engineers the recovery of the counterfeit money, which he then tricks Elizabeth into stealing. Elizabeth is arrested with the money, after which Tim comes for Geoffrey, who gladly turns over the jewels on the condition that Tim marry Corky and adopt Susan. Later, Geoffrey sends sixth birthday greetings to Susan, telling her how much he loves her and is happy to give her the gift of a mother and father. He and Sam then play cards as they are transported to prison on a train that also carries the disgruntled Elizabeth.
