Synopsis

Beneath the moonlight of the Southern skies, Molly Carrington pledges her hand to James Maxwell on the eve of his departure to New York where his knowledge of cotton has won him a good position in a cotton broker's office. After their move to the city, James finds that the transition from peaceful life in the country to the maelstrom of worldly battle is too great an adjustment, and so turns to drink. Alcohol destroys James's marriage and career, and after he loses his job, Molly leaves him and returns home. When James learns that his wife plans to divorce him and marry his former rival, Alfred Lewis, however, James' smoldering love for Molly reignites, and he realizes the curse which drink has placed upon him. Throwing off his alcoholic yoke, James wins back his position and finds Molly waiting for him the first day that he enters the office.
