Synopsis

After fighting in North Africa, Anatole Picard and Pierre Dupont return to their nineteenth century French village, each looking for Gabrielle, who is Pierre's sister and Anatole's fiancèe. The men vow to spend their lives searching for her when they find that their village was ransacked during some fighting and that Gabrielle has vanished. They look for fifty years, at which time the government calls Pierre to Paris to honor him belatedly for his wartime heroism. Departing with Anatole, Pierre dies en route, but his companion takes his place. Meanwhile, the government has learned of the search for Gabrielle and has located her. The reunited lovers embrace at the awards ceremony and then, back at the cabin where Pierre lies dead, they place the medals on his chest.
