Kathryn and Tom are complete opposites who marry after law school. After having one son, they divorce but remain in the same town where Kathryn becomes a judge. One day, 13 years after the divorce, in an encounter with his estranged son Michael, Tom learns that Kathryn is battling cancer. After years of avoiding her, Tom finds himself driven to be by Kathryn's side and she comes to accept his support despite the disapproval of her mother. Together, they discover that they are still in love. With her remaining strength Kathryn sets Tom and Michael on the road to healing their own relationship.
