Synopsis

Television movie based on the autobiography "My Own Country," by Dr. Abraham Verghese, an Ethiopian/East Indian physician specializing in infectious diseases in a small rural Tennessee town in the mid 1980s. Verghese's treatment of HIV-positive patients jeopardizes his assimilation into the small community at a time when misinformation about AIDS is widespread. The patients Verghese encounters include Vickie Talley, a trucker's wife who contracts the virus from her husband; Gordon Vines, the gay brother of Verghese's friend Mattie; and a conservative Christian couple, Lloyd and Hope Flanders, who keep their illness a secret from their family and friends for fear of rejection.
