Synopsis
The program explores the mountain music of Sand Mountain in rural Alabama. This music tradition is woven into the simple lives of the southerners, proud people who live their music and rely on it to tell the stories of their lives. The program features: Jim Connor, a composer, storyteller, mountain philosopher and master musician; Marvin, Donna and James Etherton, who perform together as a family band; Gary Waldrep, a rising star on the bluegrass circuit; Vernell Clements, a professional musician currently playing with the Etherton family's band; and Roy Prance, a former member of the "Over the Hill Gang," who enjoyed years of pickin' and playin' until arthritis claimed his hands. Also featured is Margie Jones, a non-musician who is the keeper of her grandfather's banjo. Her father, the late Arthur Kuykendall was the master banjo player of the mountain for many years and passed on his family style to a young Jim Connor.
