Synopsis

David Dickson is a wealthy plantation owner in antebellum Georgia who fathers Amanda by raping one of his slaves, Julia. Julia relinquishes Amanda to the Dicksons, realizing that her baby will be raised free because she was born with fair skin. Amanda is raised and educated by her father and grandmother as if she were white. During the Civil War, when Amanda is a grown woman, the Dicksons reveal Amanda's biracial background. Her life is turned upside down; her marriage is destroyed and she is estranged from her family. Years later, Amanda learns of her father's death and that he has left her his considerable fortune. When family members contest the will, Amanda hires an attorney, Charles Dubose, to handle the case. After mother and daughter unite, Amanda wins the difficult court battle, which makes her the largest land owner in the county and the wealthiest black person in the state of Georgia.
