In the course of conquering an untamed land, early settlers fashioned comfort from meager resources. They created homes from nothing other than what the land would give them. The program examines four types of homes that sprang up in an expanding America and explains who built them, how they were built, why they were built that way and what it was like to live in them. The four types of homes are: the post and beam homes built by the Pilgrims in New England; log homes built by Swedish settlers; houses on the prairie made from sod; and homes of adobe made by Native Americans to beat the Southwest desert heat.
