To stop the flooding of the Nile, Egyptian leader Nasser proposed to build a dam to harness the flow of the river. As a result, 20,000 Egyptian villages would receive electric power for the first time and modern industry could be established in the nation. The Egyptians, builders of pyramids and the Suez Canal, were no strangers to large undertakings. But the actual construction of the dam would pale in comparison to the social, political, cultural and agricultural ramifications that would become the dam's legacy.
