Synopsis

In Texas after the Civil War, ex-Confederate general Temple Cordeen refuses to accept the defeat of the South and organizes his own private army to keep Yankees out of his cattle empire. Unable to sanction their father's tyrannical rule, two of his sons, Lon and Hoby, aid their sister Bess in eloping with Charley Garvey and setting up a rival ranch outside of Cordeen territory. As a result of Temple's violent retaliatory measures, his wife dies from shock. Further violence occurs when Lon falls in love with Edith Wickett, the daughter of a Yankee lynched by Temple. During the final gun battle, Hoby shoots down three of his brothers before being killed himself. The senseless slaughter unhinges Temple's mind, and the feud ends. Lon and Edith take the old man back to the family ranch and make plans for a better future.
