Introduction to Dick Cavett
Introduction to Dick Cavett
On Thursdays throughout September and October, TCM welcomes Dick Cavett with a series of his inimitable, in-depth interviews, kicking off with the world premiere of Dick Cavett: Mel Brooks (2006). Nebraska-born Cavett, celebrated as one of America's wittiest and most perceptive conversationalists, wrote for Jack Paar and Johnny Carson before settling into an extraordinary career as the host of his own talk shows on such networks as ABC, CBS, PBS, USA and CNBC.

In his recently taped interview with Brooks, Cavett leads the brilliant writer/director/actor/producer through a review of a life devoted to making millions laugh through farce, parody and other forms of uproarious comedy. Films by Brooks screened in connection with the interview include the original The Producers (1968), which inspired the Broadway musical and a 2005 film based, in turn, upon the stage production, and Spaceballs (1987).

Classic interviews from The Dick Cavett Show will include a 1971 session with Woody Allen on Sept. 14, accompanied by Bananas (1971), Annie Hall (1977) and other films; an interview with Robert Mitchum, also from 1971, along with Mitchum movies including The Night of the Hunter (1955) and Cape Fear (1962) on Sept. 21; and Cavett's 1972 encounter with Alfred Hitchcock, director of Suspicion (1941), North by Northwest (1959) and other classic thrillers on Sept. 28. (Hitchcock tells Cavett that audiences like submitting themselves to a good scare, or "dipping their toe in the cold waters of fear.")
