Penn & Teller, TCM's Guest Programmers for
May, have perfected a comic collaboration
based on Penn's clown-college education
and Teller's silent, sometimes strange,
feats of magic. In a career ranging from
stage to television to best-selling books,
Penn Jillette and Raymond Joseph Teller
have captivated audiences with an edgy act
that exposes the secrets of magic along
with the foibles of our culture.
Penn & Teller join TCM host Robert Osborne
in introducing and discussing four of
their favorite films, two of which - At
the Circus (1939) and The Sunshine
Boys (1975) - revolve around the
"show-biz" partnerships much loved by
Jillette (as always, the duo's verbal
spokesman). F for Fake (1976),
Orson Welles' free-form documentary, is
"about lying and about truth and that's
the obsession of our career," says
Jillette. Fascinated by circus sideshows
since he was a child, Jillette expresses
admiration for Freaks (1932)
because it moves from the horror of
exploitation of the handicapped to
"acceptance and celebration."
