Mark your calendars for Tuesday, January 24th. TCM will be presenting the world premiere of Souls for Sale (1923) with the new original score by Marcus Sjowall, winner of the 2005 Young Film Composers Competition. The film will air at 8:00 pm ET with an encore at 3:30 am ET.
While growing up in Norrkoping, Sweden, Marcus Sjowall studied the flute, playing in both symphony orchestras and marching bands and touring with various ensembles throughout Europe. In 2002, he graduated from Berklee College of Music with a B.M. in Contemporary Writing and Production, receiving special recognition from faculty and students when his original composition was chosen for Berklee's Commencement Ceremony Processional. His professional credits include placements of his original music in television programs such as "Malcolm in the Middle" and "The Comeback" as well as recently completing the score for the drama "5 Minutes", which will be represented at the 2005 HBO New York International Latino Film Festival. He has worked with veteran film composer Steve Edwards.
Also showing in our lineup of silent movies with film scores is A Woman of Paris (1923) and Greed (1923). Aspiring composers interested in scoring their first motion picture should study these films and also enter the Seventh Annual Young Film Composers Competition which is being featured on the TCM web site home page through March 31st.
