The AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Mel Brooks

"Mel Brooks is America's long-reigning king of comedy--and, as he taught us long ago, it's good to be the king," said American Film Institute Chairman Howard Stringer in announcing Brooks as the winner of this year's AFI Life Achievement Award. The director-screenwriter- composer-lyricist-comedian- actor-producer and all-around funnyman, with such credits as The Producers, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, is among only 14 people to hold Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards.

Our tribute begins with The AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Mel Brooks, which originally aired last month on TCM sister network TNT. Unique to TCM, the program is aired uncut and commercial-free, and is followed by a lineup of rarely seen feature films, documentaries and interviews specially curated by TCM to reinforce the breadth and depth of Brooks' career.

The features include the TCM premieres of The Twelve Chairs (1970), adapted and directed by Brooks, with Ron Moody, Frank Langella and Dom DeLuise in pursuit of the titular pieces of furniture because a fortune in gold is hidden inside one of them; and Excavating the 2000 Year Old Man (2012), a documentary by Matthew Buzzell and Kel Symons about the evolution of the classic comedy sketch created by Brooks and Carl Reiner. The Brooks interviews are classics conducted by Johnny Carson and Dick Cavett.
