Starring Lee Grant

The outstanding character actress Lee Grant, who holds an Oscar® and an Emmy® along with a slew of other nominations, appears with Robert Osborne to co-host this evening of her films. A native New Yorker, Grant won an Oscar® nomination as Best Supporting Actress for her film debut in Detective Story (1951), repeating her Broadway role as a talkative shoplifter. She was subsequently blacklisted from films for several years for refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee, although she remained active in television and theater. After re-establishing herself in the movies in the 1960s, Grant was again Oscar®-nominated for The Landlord (1970). (She would finally win the award itself five years later for Shampoo.)

The other films in our Grant tribute are the comedy Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell (1968), in which Grant plays the wife of a man (Telly Savalas) who may have fathered a child with a beautiful Italian (Gina Lollobrigida); and the Paddy Chayefsky drama Middle of the Night (1959), in which she is a cynical friend of the heroine (Kim Novak).
