  • A Madcap Delight!

Unique in the limitless world of cinema, this tour de farce made me smile throughout -- and laugh out loud more than once. Young Zazie is parked with her Parisian uncle Gabriel (played by the incomparable Phillipe Noiret) while her mother induges in her latest amour. The precocious scamp is obsessed with riding the Metro, even though it's closed due to a strike. To that end she leads her be bemused uncle, plus a manic undercover policeman, on a mad pursuit that ultimately entails half the population. The variety of camera techniques employed by director Louis Malle is dazzling, and filming must have been both extremely difficult and great fun. My only disappointment was that we didn't get to see Noiret perform in drag, even though that was the married Gabriel's profession and a key plot element. This is a great way to spend 93 minutes!

Director Malle's colourful addition to the nouvelle vague. A foul-mouthed 11-year old girl stays with her uncle in a candy-coloured, surreal Paris. Numerous visual tricks are employed to make a live-action cartoon about the French language in a hyper-energetic Paris. Despite the visual excitement and funny scenarios; still feels empty and dull. I give it a 3.5/5.
