At the end of the Spanish-American war, soldier Bill Gannon takes his former sergeant, Butch McCord, home to his family ranch in Grove City. Unknown to Bill, his father Frank has turned outlaw due to the severe economic conditions in the area. Upon Bill's homecoming, Frank is initially evasive about his activities but then confesses that he felt driven to his acts by hard times and the relentless bankers. Bill and Butch both offer to help Frank go straight and restore the ranch, but Frank hesitates. The men are interrupted when a deputy comes out to the ranch to arrest Frank for the murder of the local bank manager. Frank flees and Bill and Butch follow him to his gang's hideout. Fearful that Bill will stay with the gang and be corrupted, Frank intentionally sets his son against him. After breaking with Frank, Bill's bitterness increases as he is repeatedly turned down for work because he is the son of an outlaw. Just when he is resigned to leaving the territory, Bill and Butch meet Derry Carson, who works for the Wells Fargo company. She secures both men work as guards, unaware of Bill's outlaw connection. Soon after, Blackie Jordon, one of Frank's men, learns that Bill is working as a Wells Fargo guard and will be an obstacle to the gang's planned holdup of the company's gold shipment. Blackie avoids telling Frank about Bill as the gang makes plans for getting rid of the guard before their holdup. Meanwhile, Bill is falling in love with Derry, but is unsure how to explain his father to her. At a dance, just as Bill is about to tell Derry the truth, Blackie informs the sheriff of Bill's identity, claiming that he is working with his father as an insider against Wells Fargo. The sheriff confronts Bill in front of Derry and most of the town's people and as Bill defiantly admits his identity, Blackie shoots the bank's representative, making Bill appear guilty. Bill is arrested and jailed while Blackie slips away unnoticed. When Butch arrives from his guard duty and discovers from Derry what has happened, he breaks Bill out of jail, and the two head to Frank's camp to challenge the gang about framing Bill. Frank is angered about the charge and immediately agrees to help clear Bill. Determined to rob the gold shipment, Blackie and some gang members break away as Bill, Frank and Butch ride out to warn the sheriff. All converge on the Wells Fargo wagon, and in the ensuing shootout, Blackie is killed and Frank mortally wounded. Before he dies, Frank clears Bill of all wrong doing.
