Ms. Turner could do it all.

The last time I saw "Who's Got The Action?"(1962) was on another movie channel a long time ago. As I remember, it's a comedy with Lana Turner and Dean Martin about a woman trying to deal with her husband's gambling problem who gets mixed up with the head of a mob gambling syndicate (Walter Matthau). Please show it soon TCM, and also get it on DVD.

  • Who told Lana she could do comedy?

Lana must have been emboldened by her success (??) in Bachelor In Paradise with Bob Hope, because here she is again trying to be Doris Day. Dean Martin had a string of these around this time too. (Have you seen the reconstruction of Something's Got to Give with Marilyn Monroe? About 45 minutes of the film is on a documentary disc called Marilyn: The Final Days.) Anyway, the eternally self-aware Lana Turner is anathema to comedy, so her can-do spirit when working in the genre is all the more fun to watch. Zany? I think not. Dean Martin, however, always gets high marks for comedy, and he doesn't disappoint here. Also fun to watch is Nita Talbot in the the cliche stripper role. She was probably too quirky for movie stardom, but why she was never at least a major TV star is beyond me. This whole clumsy package was later reimagined as a Barbra Streisand vehicle called For Pete's Sake, which in my opinion didn't meet with any better success, Barbra's superior comic chops not-withstanding. I'll love Lana until the day I die, and career missteps like this one only endear her to me more. It's been years since I've actually seen it, so what do you say, TCM?
