My dad fought in Italy and he told me to see this movie to have a glimpse of what it was like. Other than "The Best Years of Our Lives" and this film he hated WWII movies and especially John Wayne who was a draft dodger. It might now please the current younger crowd brought up on blood and guts graphic violence, but for the more thoughtful it is a fine film.

I AM 66 YEARS OLD AND HAVE WATCHED THIS MOVIE SINCE THE DAYS OF THE MILLION DOLLAR MOVIE,WATCHING AT LEAST ONCE A DAY DURING IT'S RUN. THE MOVIE IS NOT SO MUCH ABOUT THE WAR AS IT IS A CHARACTER STUDY, ACTING IS FANTASTIC, LINES ARE WITTY AND THE ACTION DOES NOT FALL SHORT. FOR A MOVIE TO HOLD ME FOR THIS MANY YEARS, AND I STILL WATCH A LEAST 3 TIMES A YEAR IS SIMPLY AMAZING! JUST GOES TO SHOW YOU THAT YOU DON'T NEED BLOOD AND GUTS AND FOUL LANGUAGE TO HAVE A MASTERPIECE, IT STANDS ON IT'S OWN. THIS MOVIE JUST COULD NOT BE ANY BETTER.

This is the film my uncle thought was the most real of the movies about WWII (he was there). The acting, pacing and dialogue are all top notch, all at he same time (rara avis). This film is seriously underrated.

I haven't seen the movie in years, but, I do remember it being one of my favorite WWII flicks when I was a kid growing up in the 1950's. As I recall, it was extremely suspenseful.

A gem of a movie. This is not your WWII 1940's ho-hum pitch, but a story with searing, authentic performances from a fine group of actors. I never tire of watching AWITS, it will be a classic 100 years from today!

  • The greatest war movie you've never seen.

This film is one of a kind. A war film made during the war that is not a propaganda piece. There are no sadistic Nazis; indeed, one only has brief glimpses of the Germans. The closest we get to a rah-rah speech is when Richard Conte's character says "I wish I had every Nazi right in the palm of my hand. I'd crush them to a pulp. Why don't they just leave us alone?" The film presents situations that I don't believe were seen in other war films of that era: one of the platoon sergeants experiences a nervous breakdown. The platoon has no love for their lieutenant; he's a 90-day wonder as replaceable as the last one and the next. What one is left with is what these soldiers lived with: hurry up and wait; death can come at any time; and one only knows one what can see in one's immediate surrounding. A classic by any measure.

  • What a film. Amazing.

Seeing it for the first time, this movie gives me the same impression as two of my other favorite films, Rio Bravo and The Godfather, in that it transcends its genre -- you can easily forget that it's a war movie (or western or crime drama) and get completely immersed in its brilliance as an example of the craft of film making. Its writing, casting, acting, and directing are stupendous. I watched most of it just agape -- the long, long sequences of witty and realistic dialog beside spurts of dramatic editing are mesmerizing. Compared with the contemporary (and seemingly mandatory) technique of shooting one cut per line, it shows what real acting and directing are all about. One of the most unique and rewarding film-watching experiences to be had.

A great war movie, I saw this movie about 5 times as a kid when it was released. I watch it every time it's on if I can. It shows the sacrifice these young men made.
