Top notch action packed John Wayne Adventure
This is one of John Wayne's best action packed films--EVER.Shortly before his death in 1979, Barbara Walters interviewed a sickly John Wayne at him home in Newport Beach, CA, and he said he enjoyed this film more than most.[After all, he named his production company, BATJAC, after one of the major players in this film.]Set in the South Pacific during the seafaring days of the mid 1800s, this film has everything--Greed interwoven throughout the movie with lost ships, lost treasure, and South Sea pearls. There is also numerous & fixating love-hate relationships between all the players-- with even more drama to view, especially the excellent acting by secondary role players, Gig Young, Paul Fix, and Adele Mara. This story is a haunting tale of a lost but worthy relationship between sea captain John Wayne and his found love, Gail Russell, that works to brilliance to the end. You will really enjoy this one.
I was just reading online, on Yahoo I believe, a survey asking for my best and worst movies ever. And for the worst, definitely Wake of the Red Witch. Although it is a 1948 movie I saw it around 1960, in a drive in movie theater. It was not a feature movie, but something they were running to fill time until it got really dark. That was close to 50 years ago but I have never forgotten Wake of the Red Witch because then, as now, I thought that there could never be a worse movie. And today Wake of the Red Witch still gets my vote for the worse movie ever.
