Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
- Michael Whitty
"Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" is an entertaining disaster film which inspired a TV series by Irwin Allen who went back-and-forth between TV and the movies in the 60s and then scored big with disaster epics "The Poseidon Adventure" and "The Towering Inferno" in the 70s. In "Voyage" we deal with a new nuclear submarine, The Seaview, when a big problem happens...the sky is on fire. Admiral Nelson thinks he has the answer- a rocket- which can explode the fire encircling the earth out into space. This was an attractive looking adventure which looked like a Jules Verne story. Irwin Allen was like a Jules Verne of Hollywood with both movies and TV series of incredible adventure.
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961)
- James Higgins
Typical over produced Irwin Allen spectacle, way overblown and melodramatic, a rather corny and unconvincing plot, but I sure was entertained anyway. The cast is great. Joan Fontaine sure took on a role like she has never done before. It is clear plenty of money went into the production. Technically it is quite good. Imaginative with good cinematography. A few years later it became a popular television series.
